Oh the wait, oh the alliteration — it is Waiting on Wednesday hosted by Breaking the Spine which chronicles new books we can’t wait to get.
Aside from anxiously waiting for my new e-reader to ship, this week (and every week until it actually is October 16) I am waiting on The Twelve by Justin Cronin. If you read Cronin’s The Passage then you know why – and if you haven’t I strongly suggest you spend the next few weeks before the 16th reading it, and then I am sure you will be adding The Twelve to your list too.
What are you anxiously waiting for?

Have you ever wished for a female heroine that was a mash-up of Indiana Jones and a female Fitzgerald character? Have you ever been to Southeast Asia and wished some writer could bring you back there with vivid writing of places that you remember fondly? Have you ever wanted with a flip of a page to be transported back in time to a world between the wars?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, immediately pick up Kim Fay’s terrific new book The Map of Lost Memories.
This book takes the reader along on Irene Blum’s quest for the Khmer discovery of a lifetime — the lost history of the Khmer people, allegedly housed in an uncharted temple. From Seattle to Shanghai to Vietnam and then finally Cambodia, Fay writes each place and all the characters with such clarity it is easy to lose yourself in the story.
As there are many twists and turns, I don’t want to write too much. It is a tale you should let unfold without much direction, as I did. But, I will add that I have had the amazing privilege to travel in Vietnam and Cambodia, and while Fay was writing about a time long since passed – there are many places that are still there, and Fay brought me back with her lovely descriptions of sights, sounds and smells. And if you’re looking for an exotic vacation that you never need to leave the comfort of your favorite reading chair for, this is the book for you.
**I received this book from LibraryThing‘s Early Readers program.**
